DEICING During the winter when a pond ices over the same effect occurs. The ice prevents the penetration of the life-supporting sunlight. It effectively seals the surface of the pond or lake and does not permit gas exchange (including oxygen) with the atmosphere. This of course eliminates the supply of oxygen to the living organisms in the pond such as the fish and they suffocate. It is very seldom that a pond will freeze solid from the top to the bottom, unless it is shallow and in the extreme northern hemisphere. This means that the bottom water temperature is at least a few degrees higher than in the surface water. Using a diffused air system, the warmer water is lifted to the surface and keeps the area free of ice. At the same time oxygen is added to the aquatic environment. The diffuser systems can range from 1/20 HP upwards to 5 HP or more. The size of the unit is determined by the area to be kept ice-free and the depth at which the diffuser system will operate. AREA manufactures a number of different size diffusers consisting of various types of materials. The diffusers most appropriate to the aforementioned applications are the 1' long X 2 1/6" diameter diffusers made of porous high-density polythene. A single diffuser 1' long submerged at 30' or greater having a bubble velocity of 1 ft/sec., would lift approximately 1.3 million gallons of water per day. A pond 25' deep, 100' long and 50' wide would contain approximately 937,000 gallons of water. Hence a single diffuser in this pond could conceivably turn over the entire volume of the pond once per day. If AREA is provided a sketch of the pond/lake with dimensions and depths at various points, a recommendation will be provided for the appropriate system.	1/4 HP will operate 2 - 1' diffusers at 40' or 3 - 1' diffusers at 20 feet
